The Big Marketing Lesson Bill Murray Taught Me. Have you ever seen “Groundhog’s Day”? It stars Bill Murray. It’s about a weather man (I think) who lives the same day over & over & over again. And only he is aware of it. At first, he is confused, then takes advantage of the situation. There is a long sequence where he is trying to seduce a co-worker in a single day. He does this by slowly learning everything about what she likes & then making sure he has it at the right moment. He then uses his knowledge of the coming day for the benefit of everyone, and he becomes a changed man. “O.K. Claude, Now what’s the marketing lesson here?” It’s Big. Everything in the town stayed the same…exactly the same as the day before. The only thing that changed was our hero. His “Market” was exactly the same. Only he changed. I took two important lessons away from this movie. 1) Almost everything in your life is a result of what you are doing. And.. 2) The more you know about someone, and what they want, the better your chance of them buying from you. I know. “Claude, can’t you just watch a movie like the rest of us, & just enjoy it?” Well, apparently not. This is why the “qualification questions” are so important. It changes the customers positioning of you in their mind (from clerk to advisor) and helps you find out everything you need to know to sell them. Got that? |
