Signage is important. A good store or small business sign can bring in 25% of your business. The problem is, many people don’t see your store sign. In our town, just up the street from us, is a carpet store that has a large parking lot. They bought a semi-trailer and had signs painted on both sides of the container. The signs aren’t “permanent” so there is no problem with a permit. You can do the same thing with a truck body or a van. In our parking lot we always park our store van with our name in big letters on every side. We park it as close to the street as possible. Nobody from the city has ever complained & we’ve been doing it for 5 years.

We toyed with the idea of putting “van #7” on one side and “Van #5 on the other side. Maybe putting “Van #3 on the back. We knew it would drive our competitor crazy, and make him think we had a fleet of vans. Fortunately, clearer heads prevailed.

If you have ever been approached by an ad rep, you know the feeling of confusion and frustration. They tell you how much your business will increase and how you will get SOOO many new customers. Then you run the ad, nothing happens, and the rep comes back and tells you to run it again to see if it works next time. Surely if you continue to run the ad SOMETHING will happen!

The Unfair Advantage is an excellent book that every small business owner should have on their desk. Not their bookshelf, on the desk, and the pages should be dogeared from constantly refering to this book. All businesses need to and should advertise aggressively and this book really does give you an unfair advantage by teaching you how to craft your advetisements, and where and where not to place those advertisements.
