First a little background. I received a call from Jack Sims and T. Scott Gross. Jack is the author of Growing Small Businesses Into Big Brands, and T. Scott Gross has written several best selling books on Customer Service.

Jack was the Keynote speaker at the Vacuum Dealer Trade Association trade show in Las Vegas this past February. Jack & Scott are partners. They called to invite me to produce content for their new website, and other joint-ventures. It will provide services to small businesses.

They thought my subject of Small Business Advertising would make a good fit with what they were trying to do. They saw snippets of my talk on my website. I sent them both packages of my materials to evaluate and did the first intelligent thing I could think of…I bought every book either one ever wrote. I ordered the CDs. I invested. Partly to get a feel for what they were about & partly to learn from a new source. I’ve also had several conversations with both of these “Gurus”. I just got through several books by T. Scott Gross. WOW.

Several things were striking about what he wrote.

  1. Customer service, at its highest levels is indistinguishable from high level selling.

  2. Most of his examples of OUTRAGIOUS Customer service are really sales stories. They just start out as customer service stories.

  3. Scott is a masterful storyteller & writer.

I promise that this section will be more than a glorified book report. This will be enlightening for most of us. And …Claude’s Law #687 “Inside every new profitable idea is another profitable idea dying to get out”. Like that?

Profitable ideas breed.

If you have ever been approached by an ad rep, you know the feeling of confusion and frustration. They tell you how much your business will increase and how you will get SOOO many new customers. Then you run the ad, nothing happens, and the rep comes back and tells you to run it again to see if it works next time. Surely if you continue to run the ad SOMETHING will happen!

After months of spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars, many business will throw up their hands and proclaim "ADVERTISING JUST DOESN'T WORK!"

The Unfair Advantage is an excellent book that every small business owner should have on their desk. Not their bookshelf, on the desk, and the pages should be dogeared from constantly refering to this book. All businesses need to and should advertise aggressively and this book really does give you an unfair advantage by teaching you how to craft your advetisements, and where and where not to place those advertisements. Advertising that doesn't work is expensive. Advertising that REALLY works is libertating and will take your business and your life to the next level and beyond.
