“What Do You Do When A Customer Won’t Stay On The Subject. Or Wants To Keep Talking About Her Cat Having Kittens”
Frankly, if I don’t have another customer to talk to, I’ll hear them out until they run out of wind. Five minutes taking about nothing can seem longer. Some people view retailers as their social life ( I have a few).
When someone insists on telling a story, or series of jokes, and I have other customers to help...and I want to get back on the subject of them buying my offer...I’ll say “That brings up a great point!…” and I just go right back to what we were talking about before we got sidetracked. It works every time. Have you ever had a customer not want to leave the store after they buy (or don’t buy)? I like people the same as everyone, but sometimes people are lonely and just want to talk to someone. Again, I mean if there is someone else you need to talk to. I never want to be rude. After someone talks about their dog, their sinus problems, and the price of gas, I’ll smile & say “Thanks for coming in. I hope I see you again”. almost always, they unconsciously know that that is the signal that the conversation is over. I do that on the phone too. “Well, thanks for calling. It was good talking to you”. It’’s very hard to keep talking after you hear that. But it doesn’t offend anyone.
Please use these as a last resort. Don’’t be rude. Okey Dokey?
