““Why K-Mart And JC Penney Are In Serious Trouble”

The day before I’m writing this, Cheryl & I went to two stores. We went to the JC Penny store in Canton Ohio, and The local K-Mart.

At the Penney’s we found what Cheryl wanted (a clue; I didn’t want to go in that section)

We went to get it rung up. The cashier ignored us for a full minute while she complained to another customer about how hard they work her.

When she got to us (she had no idea that I am not the right audience for her complaints), she told us the store had a Big 30% Off Sale the day before, and that she was there the whole day. “And next week we’re having another sale! They just work us girls to the bone” she said. Now I feel like we’re getting ripped off because we’re paying extra! I was perfectly happy with our purchase until that moment.

So I said “So we missed yesterday’s sale...and you are having one next week....is that what you’re saying?””

Her-”I suppose so”.

I could have gone on, but she wasn’t fun to talk to. Here is what her actions and attitude told us about JC Penney’’s;

They were cruel to their employees

They didn’t have what we were buying on sale that day

We shouldn’t buy from them that day

We sure as heck shouldn’t buy if that girl is working in our area

I wonder how many people left saying to themselves “Well, I’ll never shop there again”?

Oh, well. Let’s assume that she has “worked” there for 5 years. That’s 1,200 days at least that she has made it clear to all who will listen…...JC Penney’s isn’t a good company to work for and they are mean to employees. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars has this person cost her employer?

Later that day, we went to K-Mart to buy batteries.

We buy the batteries. The person in line ahead of us is listening to this; “Yeah, the store forgot to put the sale prices on everything. They sure make it hard on us. “ (as she wipes her beaten brow). She said the exact same thing to us. And ““Claude the passionate” said to her; “Dear, the batteries weren’t on sale. We are happy to give you the regular price. Is that OK?””

She looked at me like I was from Mars.

Never tell your customers your problems. Ever.

Tell your salespeople and anyone else working in your business….Never tell your customers your problems.

The vast majority don’t care, and some will be turned off enough that they will never return.

And this is for you...owner of your business…

Don’’t tell your employees your problems. They will be thinking about whether they will still have a job. They will be worried that they may not get a raise. They may like you, and enjoy working with you...but they don’t want to hear that their employer is having problems.

Just a word to the wise.

Your Survival Guide to Ad Reps Who Don't Know Any Better!, January 23, 2010

By Gloria Steinman "Obsessive Compulsive Book Re... (Sandusky, OH)

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

If you have ever been approached by an ad rep, you know the feeling of confusion and frustration. They tell you how much your business will increase and how you will get SOOO many new customers. Then you run the ad, nothing happens, and the rep comes back and tells you to run it again to see if it works next time. Surely if you continue to run the ad SOMETHING will happen!

After months of spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars, many business will throw up their hands and proclaim "ADVERTISING JUST DOESN'T WORK!"

But what you don't know, and to be honest the ad rep doesn't know it either, is that the simple act of purchasing an ad does not mean you will get a response!

There are tried and true "rules" to advertising and Claude's book is very good at laying those "rules" out in an easy to understand way. It is not the last book you should ever read on advertising but it can be used to IMMEDIATELY improve the response to YOUR advertising!

I highly recommend this book to any small business that operates on a local level.

The $20 bucks you'll spend (at Amazon.com) on this book will be well worth it and if you actually put some of Claude's principles to work you could see a return on investment worth thousands of times the cost of this book! Claude has spent 10 years in the school of harsh reality and has tested and tweaked these methods for the survival of his own business.

An Incredibly Valuable Book!, January 19, 2010

By Mike McGroarty

The Unfair Advantage is an excellent book that every small business owner should have on their desk. Not their bookshelf, on the desk, and the pages should be dogeared from constantly refering to this book. All businesses need to and should advertise aggressively and this book really does give you an unfair advantage by teaching you how to craft your advetisements, and where and where not to place those advertisements. Advertising that doesn't work is expensive. Advertising that REALLY works is libertating and will take your business and your life to the next level and beyond.
