““Why K-Mart And JC Penney Are In Serious Trouble”
The day before I’m writing this, Cheryl & I went to two stores. We went to the JC Penny store in Canton Ohio, and The local K-Mart.
At the Penney’s we found what Cheryl wanted (a clue; I didn’t want to go in that section) We went to get it rung up. The cashier ignored us for a full minute while she complained to another customer about how hard they work her. When she got to us (she had no idea that I am not the right audience for her complaints), she told us the store had a Big 30% Off Sale the day before, and that she was there the whole day. “And next week we’re having another sale! They just work us girls to the bone” she said. Now I feel like we’re getting ripped off because we’re paying extra! I was perfectly happy with our purchase until that moment.
So I said “So we missed yesterday’s sale...and you are having one next week....is that what you’re saying?””
Her-”I suppose so”.
I could have gone on, but she wasn’t fun to talk to. Here is what her actions and attitude told us about JC Penney’’s; They were cruel to their employees They didn’t have what we were buying on sale that day We shouldn’t buy from them that day We sure as heck shouldn’t buy if that girl is working in our area
I wonder how many people left saying to themselves “Well, I’ll never shop there again”?
Oh, well. Let’s assume that she has “worked” there for 5 years. That’s 1,200 days at least that she has made it clear to all who will listen…...JC Penney’s isn’t a good company to work for and they are mean to employees. How many hundreds of thousands of dollars has this person cost her employer?
Later that day, we went to K-Mart to buy batteries. We buy the batteries. The person in line ahead of us is listening to this; “Yeah, the store forgot to put the sale prices on everything. They sure make it hard on us. “ (as she wipes her beaten brow). She said the exact same thing to us. And ““Claude the passionate” said to her; “Dear, the batteries weren’t on sale. We are happy to give you the regular price. Is that OK?””
She looked at me like I was from Mars.
Never tell your customers your problems. Ever.
Tell your salespeople and anyone else working in your business….Never tell your customers your problems.
The vast majority don’t care, and some will be turned off enough that they will never return.
And this is for you...owner of your business…
Don’’t tell your employees your problems. They will be thinking about whether they will still have a job. They will be worried that they may not get a raise. They may like you, and enjoy working with you...but they don’t want to hear that their employer is having problems. Just a word to the wise.
