Most ads, speeches, presentations, or demonstrations center around one thing; What we have to offer.

I’ve seen countless demonstrations that are a list of the things that the company has accomplished, followed by how great the company is……….followed by the dealer getting mad because the customer didn’t “see the light”.

This is going to be hard to accept, so I’’ll be as gentle as possible…….wait for it...wait for it…….

The customer doesn’t care about your company. And they don’t care about you. They care about their problems….and possibly, what you can do for them.

This doesn’t make them evil, we are all the same.

So every product pitch or ad that tells about the company , or about your store (or small business) is mostly falling on deaf ears.

Some customers will be polite, if you are talking about yourself (or your company)…..but that’s one major reason they don’t buy.

Do this; Change every product demonstration to stop using “We have…” or “We are….” and change it to “You want”...or You get”…

Not “Here’s what we have” but “Here’s what you get”

Re-write all your ads that include “We are”” to say “For you, we…”

If you think about it, you can change almost any sentence from a “Me-Centered” language to a “You Centered” language.

So what’s the big advantage to this?
The customer will always be interested in what you say...and will always read what you write...if it’’s about them.

This is a challenge for me sometimes. But let’s give it a try;

“We are the biggest vacuum cleaner retailer in town. We have the biggest stock of parts, and we give fast service. We’re the best.”

Now let’s make that more “You Centered”;

“Customers like you have helped us become the largest vacuum retailer in town. That way, you will always find the part you need right here. You’ll also enjoy getting your vacuum service quickly. Is that what you want?” (assuming they ask about service)

Now, which one sounded better to you?

Even the little things count.  “You get…” starts a sentence that every customer will listen to.
