“What Determines Where Your Small Business, Retail Store, Or Life Are Headed?” When I was a child, my dad had a terrible habit. He would look around at the scenery when he drove a car. And wherever he looked...that’s where the car started heading. It made for some tense and interesting moments. It’s the same with our business and our life. We head where were are looking. Direction determines destination. When I was a very young man, I used to think of the year 2000 as the distant future. I would think; “My God, I’ll be 45 years old in the year 2000...I wonder what I’ll be doing? Where will I be living? Will I be rich? Poor? Married? Happy? Dead?” Now I know. Some people call these things Goals. And here is something I have learned the hard expensive way…. If you don’t have a solid known direction that you are headed, the things happening to you will determine where you end up. But if you have a known destination...a Goal...a thing you want to accomplish...then you determine where you end up. Right now, in our town, our roads are being resurfaced. There are lots of detours, and the smell of hot asphalt. This morning I took the mail to the post office. There were two detours that took me almost al the way around town to get to the post office. Was there a chance that these detours would keep me from my mission? Absolutely not, it never occurred to me. But what if I didn’t know where the postoffice was….or I didn’t really know where I wanted to go? I would have ended up out of town. Lost. The last 9 or 10 years, I’ve known pretty much where I’m going. And the last couple of years, I’ve known exactly where I’m going. But for the 20 years before that? I just worked, and pretty much let things happen. What a waste. Learn from my mistake. |
