“I Don’t Need To Advertise Or Do Any Marketing. My Customers All Come From Word-Of-Mouth”

I’m currently writing a book on how to sell advertising. The working title is  “Selling Local Advertising”.

In researching for the book, I had an interview with a top advertising sales rep. He told me that this statement came up and he didn’t have a good answer for it.

You have to understand my initial point-of-view.
Maybe this is a legitimate objection to buying. Maybe this person really doesn’t need to advertise. Maybe they have more customers than they can handle now.

The rep assured me that the “objection” comes from people who used to advertise, and no longer do.
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, they used to advertise. That told me everything I needed to know. I told the rep

“Tell them that they are advertising in the best way possible; referrals from satisfied owners.
That in the beginning he had to build a customer base so that he would have satisfied customers who could then give him referrals.
Those initial customers were attracted to his store through advertising.

So if the dealer wants to see a new surge of brand new customers….he can just repeat what he did before...advertise smartly.”

The rep was happy with that.

The reason I brought this up is that we forget the long term effects of marketing.
For example, repeat customers had to be a first-time customer...um....first.  Then they could become a repeat customer. That initial purchase may well have come from advertising that was done years ago…….advertising that you have completely forgotten about.

So one single ad can pay off in many way for years to come.
